Census James Banfield Moore Harris & Family
At
the time of the Census in March 1851 the Harris family were living at the
Workhouse at St Martins in The Fields London. As Jame's profession was a
Stone Mason he may well have been working nearby at this time which is why
he is in the Workhouse. The census extracts above show James (bottom) aged
30, his wife Sophia aged 26, and above her their daughter Elizabeth (Betsy)
aged 2. Their only other child was James who was now aged 4 and living with
his grandmother in Southwark.
The images below show a map of the area of St Martins Workhouse
which was located behind The National Gallery off Trafalgar Square. The
engraved picture shows the view down Hemmings Row. The Workhouse building
is on the right.
